What Is Sculptra® Aesthetic Injectable?

Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable treatment designed to counteract facial fat loss, a common effect of aging. By stimulating collagen production—which naturally declines over time—it helps restore volume and reduce the appearance of shallow to deep facial wrinkles, especially the nasolabial folds (lines running from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth). It is not suitable for use around the eyes or lips.

Key Ingredient: Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

The primary component of Sculptra Aesthetic is poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), an alpha hydroxy acid. This synthetic, biocompatible, and biodegradable substance has been safely used in medical applications for over two decades, including dissolvable stitches and soft-tissue implants.

Benefits of Sculptra Aesthetic Facial Injectable

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating nasolabial folds, Sculptra Aesthetic offers a safe and effective solution for many patients. Its gradual results lead to a smoother, more youthful, and natural-looking appearance. While not FDA-approved for other areas, the manufacturer, Valeant Aesthetics, notes it can also be used to improve marionette lines (at the corners of the mouth) and chin wrinkles.

Sculptra contains no human, animal, or bacterial components, so no allergy testing is required beforehand. Most patients experience minimal to no downtime and can resume their normal activities shortly after treatment.

Treatment Process and Expected Results

Sculptra Aesthetic is intended as a one-time treatment series, typically consisting of up to four injection sessions spaced about three weeks apart. When injected into facial folds and wrinkles, it stimulates collagen growth, gradually restoring volume and improving skin texture.

While individual results may vary, clinical studies have shown the effects of Sculptra can last up to two years in most patients.

Potential Side Effects

Common side effects may include minor bleeding, tenderness, redness, bruising, swelling, or discomfort at the injection site. These effects usually subside within a few days but may persist longer in some cases.

According to Valeant Aesthetics, “Other side effects may include small lumps under the skin that are sometimes noticeable when pressing on the treated area. Larger lumps, some with delayed onset with or without inflammation or skin discoloration, have also been reported.”
